Last week my cousin Cameron's acapella group came up to perform in Cleveland. This kid's got talent (although older generations may not readily recognize it ;). He's a beat boxer AND he's got some sweet moves!
So, for any of you who have gone to BYU recently, you know that you can't escape the plethora of acapella groups. I'm pretty sure all of the roommates I've ever had at BYU were obsessed with acapella (with the exception of my dearest husband), so I unfortunately got my fill. The acapella groups I'm talking about don't sing barber shop quartet style or choral music sans accompaniament, they sing pop songs including all instrumental parts--drums, guitars, bass, tambourines, triangle and 20 other unclassified/unrecognizable noises. Now don't get me wrong, this is usually how I prefer to listen to my all-time favorite CD Weezer's Blue album (singing all parts and instruments at the same time at the top of my lungs), but it's pretty excruciating listening to other people do this.
At Cameron's concert, there were a couple other groups that performed before them. Case Western's group performed right before Cam's and they were really the only other group I heard. They were AWFUL! They were the epitome of what I hate about acapella bands--20 guys singing beep bop boop doop poop all in different keys and on different rhythms. I was cringing the whole time. And by the time Mark showed up, he was cringing too. Not to mention the uber embarrassing, and offensive (so maybe I'm a little prude and uncool--but it really was totally inappropriate) song they sang about curing all their blues by looking at their "large" exclusively male body part--the one song they sang barbershop quartet style.
Cameron's group (high schoolers), on the other hand, was amazing. I actually LOVED it. It was fun. I danced around and sang along. Each group member had a clear specific part that they had to sing and so it didn't sound like a big garbled mess. The girls had really strong, clear voices--they could really belt it out! The guys were pretty good too, though Cameron was best (I'm biased). Anyway, I taped it and posted a couple clips on youtube so I wanted to share them with you. The sound from the videorecording doesn't do the group justice but you get the idea.

Whole group performing some song about love--can someone tell me what it's called?
Enjoy!
