Delicious Dish

Mark and I are trying to adopt a more vegetarian diet. I'm sure we will probably stay in this transition phase for a very long time as I still like to eat meat. I just don't want every meal I cook to be based on ground beef. I just need to broaden my horizons when it comes to cooking.
It recently occurred to me that I could make my own homemade naan. woohoo! I was so excited that I decided to make curry to go with it! I found this great vegetarian curry here. My first attempt at making the naan failed since I killed the yeast. I was running out of time before dinner so I made up my own version of naan and it worked out really well. It was pretty easy too!

Here's the recipe:

2/3 cup milk (hot, but not too hot)
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon yeast

2+ cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 cup plain, NF yogurt
2 Tablespoons olive oil

Dissolve yeast and sugar in hot milk, let sit for 10 minutes or so. Wisk flour, salt, and baking powder together. Add milk mixture, yogurt, and oil. Mix until forms a ball. Add a little more flour as needed. knead until dough is only slightly sticky but does not stick to kneading surface. Place in bowl in warm spot for 1 1/2 hours or until doubled in size*. When ready, preheat oven to 550 degrees (or as hot as your oven goes). Punch down down and let sit for 5 minutes. Divide dough into 6 parts and roll each piece into a flat 6-8" circle. Cover baking pan w/ foil and spray with cooking spray. place one circle on pan and cook 1 at a time 2-4 minutes. watch carefully so it doesn't burn. Naan should puff up and turn a little bit brown.

*I only had an hour before I wanted to sit down to eat so I heated my oven to 200 degrees and then turned it off and stuck the dough (in a bowl) in the oven to rise. after 45 minutes it looked risen enough so I continued on from there. I also didn't have my oven completely preheated to 550 before I stuck the naan in so it was in there a little longer than 4 minutes before it was done. most of the naan puffed up really nicely, some didn't but either way it tasted great!

By the way, the two recipes I based my own off of are here and here.

Enjoy!

oh yum Holly, that looks so good! I have been trying to get more veggies in our diets too, but Josh is not at all interested in meals without meat. He loves meat. If I mentioned vegitarian curry, he would probably make a special trip to the store to get lamb to put in it or something. Congratulations on your organizational accomplishments too.

I love Indian food and your food looked delicious! I will have to try and make it. We don't eat meat with every meal, but we don't want to give it up altogether either. Noah is so cute!
