Camping and the Amish

2 weekends ago we went camping as a family for the first time. We went to this awesome lake less than 2 hours away from us.

It was fun to try out our new tent!

Noah loved sleeping in his pack n play (he's pretty jealous that Maren gets to sleep in one on a regular basis)

Noah REALLY likes fire

The beach was a short walk from our tent. The weather was perfect for a dip!

Maren was there

So was I

Across from our campsite was a large Amish family reunion. I didn't know Amish people went camping, but they do! They have got to be the ultimate campers! Here are some other things I learned:

They play volleyball
They eat Nacho Cheese Doritos
Some drive trucks and even an RV
One kid had a cell phone
They love to rollerblade--long skirts and all!
The boys are avid fishers
They like to take a dip in the water--again, skirts and all!
They stare at us as much as we stare at them :)
They speak a different language as well as English.
Not all of them (boys) have the same funny haircut

When I told someone else about this, they thought that maybe this group was Mennonite. Possibly. (I have Mennonite cousins. If it's true this group was Men. then my cousins must be on the liberal side of the spectrum.) Mark said he spotted a horse n buggy at the campsite so for now I will stick to my Amish theory.

Who would have thought!

wow! I was surprised on our road trip to see an amish man eating at dairy queen and others shopping at the local mart. I remember reading in a nancy drew book once that there are "house amish" and there's another kind of amish, too, and one of the kinds will use modern amenities, they just set limits on their use. Sounds logical to me. (I've got a timer going for how long I can blog browse tonight.... heh...)

When I read your list my first thought too was that these people are probably traditionalist Mennonites. From what I understand of the Mennonites, they can range a great deal in practice. They all have the same core beliefs, but some live a more traditional lifestyle similar to the Amish but others live a very modern lifestyle. If they were driving trucks then they were probably Mennonites. The Amish are allowed to ride in cars but they can't own them or drive them.
On a side note, I've been really into reading novels about the Amish and the Mennonites. Very interesting!

It looks like you guys had a fun camping trip! Thanks for all the information on what the Amish do! Haha...I'm now a bit more educated on them!
