theme weeks

For the last few weeks I've been doing theme weeks with Noah. Each week he picks a theme and then we go to the library and get a ton of books (picture and non-fiction) on the topic. When we started, I had this grand idea of doing different things with it everyday (spelling, vocab, math, science, etc). Yeah, that lasted about 3 days. But fortunately, our book system is going great and when we read our theme books, I like to think that he gets a little more something out of it than normal. This week our theme is "people" (random, I know--I think Noah was just trying to be silly). I got books about jobs, different cultures, important people, etc. Today we read fun books about what kids want to be when they group up, as well as biographies (kids' versions) on Barack Obama and Martin Luther King Jr.

A couple weeks ago we had Car Week and I found this fun rubber band car book at the library. We made 2 of the cars from the book. We also watched NASCAR race clips and videos on how engines work. Is it bad that I want to continue reading some of these books even after Noah goes to bed?

Making the Railroad Pushcar

These cars are pretty cool and basically free to make. You need pencils, glue (we used hot glue, but elmers works too), rubberbands, and corrugated cardboard. Some cars need a few extra things like paper clips or pushpins... You can get the book from the library or even get a 99 cent copy from amazon. This kind of project is probably better for older kids--I had to do most of it, but Noah really enjoyed winding the cars up and seeing how far they could go.

PS You know who said...

You like to keep playing, too, like all those LEGO creations you made "with/for Noah." Awesome.

That's so cool! You are such a great mom! And no, I don't think it's nerdy to want to read the books too! Funny the things you can learn from kid's books!
