Apple Picking

Apple picking is one of my favorite fall traditions here in Cleveland. The kids love it and eat more apples in a day than they normally do in a month! And the apples are soooo good--much different than the ones you find at the store. We tried some Macoun apples this year which have a very unusual flavor for apples--kind of tangy. Anyway, here's the group:

We got about 13 lbs of apples. This is what I've made so far. What would you make with a bunch of apples?

Perfect timing! We are working our way through 50 pounds of apples right now. We were going to go apple picking, but Josh believes in migrant workers doing the picking, so we bought pre picked seconds at the little orchard store. We have gone through our 20 pounds of sauce apples making apple sauce and apple butter, and last night we made apple filling for four pies. We still have about 12 pounds worth of baking apples, and I really don't think we need a freezer full of the exact same apple pie, so cheddar apple pie it is!

I love making apple sauce. I will have to give you my apple sauce puree machine when you get settled in the next place - if there are apples! The cheddar crust sounds wonderful, too.
